April 20th UPDATE…

Look at that counter!!  Can you beleive RSD is one more sleep away!  Bought a whole whack of snacks for the ‘refreshment table’.  All Cheeky Charlie’s favourite foods – and none of them health.  Isn’t that what a party is about – fun, music and junk food?!

Tell you friends to sign up thru this website for our newsletter if they want to get the SPECIAL EDITION delivered tonight announcing our DEALS and EXCLUSIVE items we will have for sale.

April 18th UPDATE…

Lots to report today!!! The excitement is mounting!!!!

First off, got a box of sampler CD’s from Mint Records to use as part of our giveaways. Thank you Mint Records!

Second – added another item to the draws thanks to Michele at Select  and she sent a bundle of posters to use as giveaways too.

Here is the complete list of draw items…

…MARK LANEGAN test press LP
… ALBUMS: Stories Behind 50 Years of Great Recordings -Hardcover book
… FILL YOUR HEAD WITH ROCK – soft cover book (2 copies to be drawn for)
… BORN TO LOSE – soft cover book
… ALBUM COVER FRAMES – (2 to draw for – donated by Zony’s Custom Framing)
… COLLECTOR COCA-COLA GLASSES – set of 6
… ROLLING STONES silk scarf
… 2 tickets for Godspell at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia

Third – not only was there an interview on the Sarnia Observer on line, but it was in their Tuesday printed paper too.

Fourth – had an email from Meg of CBC BandWidth confirming she received my voice mailed interview and the mp3′s of the songs we requested she play on the show.  Take a listen if you can.  It was a difficult decision to pick just one musician from the huge number of local talent we have in Sarnia.  We chose Jim Chevalier.

Lastly (for now)- check out the interview with Dave Burrows on THE SHOW

REMINDER:  if you want to see a list of what exclusive releases we will have for RSD – then subscribe to our newsletter (go to the home page of this website).  On Friday night a SPECIAL EDITION newsletter will be in your IN BOX.

April 16th UPDATE…

Spoke on the phone with Meg, host of BandWidth on CBC Radio ONE (Saturdays 5 – 6 pm).  She asked lots of questions about our store and how we are celebrating Record Store Day. She had me call into her answering machine to give all the details to be broadcast on her show this week.

The Observer ran a store and photo on their on line paper (is that an oxymoron).  You can read it by CLICKING HERE.

April 14th UPDATE…

Less then one week to RECORD STORE DAY!!  Look at the counter above – the excitement is building.

Thanks to Victoria Playhouse Petrolia, another item has been added to the goods we will be having draws for.  They have very kindly donated 2 tickets for their upcoming play of GODSPELL.   These are for opening night on Friday June 8 and includes attendance at the opening night reception.  Pictured with Cheeky Charlie are Keely (house tech), Heather (you’ll see her at the VPP boxoffice) and Laurissa (who wears several hats at the VPP including Marketing Associate and Front of House Manager).

April 11th UPDATE…

We at Cheeky Monkey are so grateful to our local media for their continued support not only our store, but of the local musicians and artists.

Yesterday, Paul Morton called to do a telephone interview, then walked down to take a photo of Roland and I for The Observer.

Today, Heather Wright of Sarnia This Week, arranged to interview a regular, loyal customer, Todd Chipman about  shopping here and upcoming Record Store Day.  Todd is also a member of the band Antennaes who will be performing on RSD at 2:30 pm.  While Heather was here, she asked Cheeky Charlie a few questions too.  He is of course going ape over RSD!

… COLLECTOR COCA-COLA GLASSES – set of 6
… ROLLING STONES silk scarf

April 7th UPDATE…

The cake designs are picked.  What til you see how cool they are.  Nicole is such a wonderful culinary artist.

Spent today setting up media interviews.  Was very easy to find a willing customer to be interviewed by one of the local papers and possibly CBC radio.

April 3rd Update…

Just had a consultation with Nicole at Junior Baker.  She has so many good ideas for the cake for Records Store Day, it is hard to choose.  Regardless the design we decide on, there will be plenty of yummy Junior Baker cake to go around.

I’ve been emailing with Frank Deresti and The Lake Effect.  They are as excited to be playing here for RSD as we are to host them.  Their 2 Sarnia shows, here and at Paddy Flaherty’s later the same night, are part of their CD Release Tour.

March 28 Update…

Just got confirmation from Jim Chevalier.  He will be playing at Cheeky Monkey for Record Store Day starting at noon!  Cheeky Charlie is very excited to have Jim back on the Red Carpet Stage.  He is truly an icon in the Sarnia music scene and the perfect fit to celebrate with us.

New video for you to enjoy of the Antennaes who play a t2:30 pm on Record Store Day…

March 26 Update…

On Saturday, Zony of Zony Framing located diagonally across the street from us Cheeky Monkey, dropped off 2 custom made Album Cover Frames he is donating to the draw table for Record Store Day.  Cheeky Charlie was very happy to accept this perfect addition to the items you can choose to try and win.

Here’s a video to enjoy watching of When Systems Collide – the band that will start playing at 1:00 pm on Record Store Day

March 24 Update…

Cheeky Charlie and I went for a walk down Christina and around the corner of Lochiel to Junior Baker to discuss this years cakes with Nicole.  Every year Junior Baker has provided the fabulous cakes for RSD.  And every year Nicole comes up with fantastic creations that are truly the centerpiece of the food table.  We are sure she will come through again this year.  Charlie gave her a few of his ideas to think about as they looked at photos of past years creations – he always has to put his 2 cents worth into all the plans for the fun events at Cheeky Monkey.

March 22 UPDATE…

As of today, we now have 3 bands booked for Record Store day on Sat. April 21st.

The first two bands are both homegrown talent.  When Systems Collide will start at 1:00 pm followed by Antennaes at 2:30 pm.  Both bands have played at Cheeky Monkey before for First Friday events and previous Record Store Days.  We are always thrilled to have them back.  Both bands play original material and are comprised of very accomplished musicians.

When Systems Collide  unique songs are filled with melodic guitar, insightful lyrics and memorable vocals. Their debut ep – Save Us, We’re Slow, was released in January 2011, followed by their 2nd ep “Tennessee”, released in June 2011. In the same year, they have been been featured on CBC Radio One’s “Bandwidth”, the Indie Rock Show at 95.1 (Chatham/Windsor) and on the New and Emerging Rock Show at k106.3 in Sarnia. They have had the fortune to open for bands like Elliot Brood, Econoline Crush, and Wax Mannequin. They have had much success in their local area, most recently, winning a battle of the bands event. In the fall of 2011 they completed their first Ontario tour, to be followed by an east coast tour in May of 2012.

Antennaes influences are far too varied to mention although they do crop up in the songs. Think Son Volt and Drive by Truckers meet The Pixies and Buffalo Tom with some Who, Eagles and U2 in there as well. As you can tell Rule 1 is anything goes.
Sounds Like… You be the judge…

Both bands self-released CD’s are available to purchase at Cheeky Monkey.

At 4:00 pm, Frank Deresti and The Lake Effect will be performing.  Hailing from Sault Sainte Marie Ontario, they are taking time to stop in for Record Store Day before playing Paddy Flaherty’s late the same night.

Frank Deresti and the lake effect”, consists of a highly skilled group of musicians performing arrangements of several original songs written by frank, as well as occasional tasty re-arrangements of songs by better-known artists. this 5-plus piece band brings a level of musicianship and energy to the singer-songwriter genre that place this group in a class by themselves. The cross-genre versatility of each of the players results in a fresh new sound covering elements of folk, jazz, roots, and various other influences sure to engage a wide cross-section of listeners.

March 19 UPDATE…

Save the date of Saturday, April 21st.  It is RECORD STORE DAY.  This is the one day  a year that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists across the globe make special appearances and performances.

The very first RSD was in 2007 – and Cheeky Monkey has celebrated it every year with live in store music, draws, giveaways, deals,  food and of course tons of the exclusive items available only to participating independent stores.

The wheels are in motion to make this another fantastic special event.  Bands are being booked, exclusive items being ordered, food being arranged, volunteers are on board (Ross & Laurissa – thank you in advance), giveaway & draw items arriving etc etc.

This years event will be in conjunction with Indie Post, Sarnia’s newest and hippest entertainment zine.  This is an exciting partnership for us.  We very much look forward to working with Marty & Cam.

Watch for more updates as they happen.  In the meantime enjoy this video from Record Store Day Official Ambassador, IGGY POP…
