Trivia Q & A # 7 2013

Q.  True or False - The Band recorded "Music From The Bit Pink" A.  True None of the Band's previous work gave much of a clue about how they would sound when they released their first album in July 1968. As it was, Music from Big Pink came as a surprise. At first blush, the group seemed to affect the sound of a loose jam session, alternating emphasis on different instruments, while the lead and harmony vocals passed back and forth as if the singers were making up their blend on the spot. In retrospect, especially as the lyrics sank in, the arrangements seemed far more considered and crafted to support a group of songs that took family, faith, and rural life as their subjects and proceeded to imbue their values with uncertainty. Some songs took on the theme of declining institutions less clearly than others, but the points were made musically as much as ...

PATTI SMITH – BANGA

PATTI SMITH – BANGA

Banga is Patti Smith's first collection of original material since 2004's critically-acclaimed Trampin'. The album was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City and produced by Patti Smith and her band: Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty and her long-time collaborator Lenny Kaye. Featured guests include Tom Verlaine, Jack Petruzzelli, Smith's son Jackson and daughter Jesse Paris. Inspired by Smith's unique dreams and observations, Banga's poetic lyrics are a reflection of our complex world a world that is rife with chaos and beauty. Praised for her storytelling abilities, Smith has crafted an album that captures a wide range of human experience. There is an exploratory spirit in the songs that make up Banga, including a melodic overture imagining the voyage of Amerigo Vespucci to the New World in 1497 ("Amerigo"), a rock song for the people of Japan in the wake of last years earthquake ("Fuji-san"), a classic ballad ...

Anne Murray on Family Guy

Anne Murray on Family Guy

What a surprise and a laugh, to discover Anne Murray was a featured guest on Family Guy TV show on Sunday Feb. 17. Not only was her hit song 'Snowbird' played several times, since Stewie was obsessed with it, but they visited Anne herself - and yes it was her voice. Even a nicer surprise is she gave writing credits for the song to Gene MacLellan. This hit home for us, since we personally know Catherine MacLellan, Gene's talented daughter. We have hosted her twice here in Sarnia for performances at the Sarnia Library Auditorium and the Trinity Lounge. First time was as a duo with guitarist Chris Gauthier as opening act for Stephen Fearing. Second time was the headliner with her full band with. This second visit to Sarnia was really memorable for us. Not only is Catherine a fantastic singer songwriter to see perform, but we had the ...

Trivia Q & A # 6 2013

Q.  Who was "Born To Run"? A.  Bruce Springsteen Written at 7½ West End Court in Long Branch, New Jersey in early 1974, the song was Bruce Springsteen's last-ditch effort to make it big. The prior year, Springsteen had released two albums to critical acclaim but with little commercial success. The lyrics to the song are appropriately epic for his last-ditch, all-or-nothing shot at the stars, yet they remain rooted in the universal desperation of adolescence: Will you walk with me out on the wire, cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider...We gotta get out while we're young, 'cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run.' Written in the first person, the song is a love letter to a girl named Wendy (Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend I wanna guard your dreams and visions...; I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight/in an everlasting kiss!), for whom the hot-rod-riding ...

RICHARD THOMPSON – SWEET WARRIOR

RICHARD THOMPSON – SWEET...

2OO7 Release.  Richard Thompson is one of our VERY favourite musicians and we hope he becomes one of yours too. Back in the '80s and '90s, Richard Thompson could be depended upon to release a well-crafted collection of Celtic-influenced folk-rock every few years. But when he left Capitol after 1999's Mock Tudor, Thompson headed off on side projects, all of typically high quality, but not the solo albums his established cult expected. Those fans can  rejoice, because on Sweet Warrior Thompson roars back with his first electric set of originals since 2003, and it's a winner. As the disc's title implies, he revisits the familiar territory of love as a battlefield in these 14 originals. The concept is emphasized by a liner photo of the singer/songwriter in army gear and camouflage flanked by two beautiful women planting kisses on either cheek. Supported by longtime backing cohorts, the guitarist adds to his six-string talents with ...
