Mike Stevens’ “...

On Saturday October 20, the Sarnia Justice Film Festival opened their new season with the documentary 'WALK IN MY DREAMS' at the Library Auditorium. This film has been several years in the making and well worth the wait. It chronicles local musician Mike Stevens' career from his leaving a good paying job in Sarnia's Chemical Valley to being a nervous Canadian bluegrass harmonica player on the Grand Ole Opry stage and onward. He has had an amazing career to date with no signs of stopping in the near future. To our knowledge Mike is THE pioneer of playing bluegrass music on harmonica. It was certainly unheard of at the time of his first of over 300 appearance on the Grand Ole Opry. Over a decade ago, while on tour to perform for the Armed Services, a stop in Goose Bay, Labrador changed his life. While there he was brought to the village ...

October 2012 First Friday – Perfect Autumn Night

Posted in: Concerts & Events, First Friday, Local Talent, News | No Comments

October 2012 First Friday &...

Some may not consider a windy, rainy October night perfect but add in Erika and Sara performing at Cheeky Monkey and it's like the sunshine is all around you.  With their smiling faces, sweet voices accompanied by skillful acoustic guitar and occasional harmonica, they can turn the gloomiest day around for even the casual listener. This was not their first time playing at Cheeky Monkey, but it was the first time to playing here during a First Friday.  With each playing here, they add another aspect to the performance.  This time they added more harmonies, more harmonica and rather then just Sara playing guitar, they both played.  Proving these duo is evolving in the best kind of way. The October First Friday was  also the big opening night for the new Judith and Norman Alix Art Gallery.  Knowing this, we were very uncertain as to how many people would make it to our end of the ...

First Impressions of Alix Art...

Wednesday October 3, 2012 Roland and I had the pleasure of being two of the many downtown merchants and First Friday participants invited to a "sneak peek" at the new Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery. I should state for the record, the opinions given here are mine and mine alone. From talking to customers in the store and reading on-line blogs, I realize not everyone is excited by the new gallery. My view on that is that we (citizens of Sarnia) own some amazing pieces of art that deserve to be seen by everyone. For those not familiar with how we got this art collection, let me give you the thumbnail version of the Gallery's history. During WWI, yes World War I, a group of women raised money to help the war effort. When the war was over, they had money left and formed the Sarnia Women's Conservation Art Association (SWCAA). ...

AWESOME LOCAL TALENT SHOW @ IMPERIAL

AWESOME LOCAL TALENT SHOW @...

The phase "a good time was had by all" has never been so appropriate as when talking about the Local Talent Showcase we sponsored at the Imperial Theatre Friday September 28th. The last minute Master of Ceremonies for the evening was David Burrows of THE SHOW and karaoke fame. He manged to catch Roland & I off guard by asking us to come up on the stage. Having NEVER been in front of a microphone before in my life, I nervously let everyone know they were in for a great night. David was much more comfortable on stage and did a fabulous job of introducing the acts. The night of music started with a too short set of acoustic songs from Jim Chevalier. Between the songs we heard the stories that inspired the lyrics. Jim's songs come straight from the heart and are very personal, yet everyone can relate to them. His ...
