Dylan Menzie visits Cheeky Monkey

Dylan Menzie visits Cheeky...

On Saturday, November 19, 2021 it was a true pleasure to welcome PEI singer/songwriter Dylan Menize to Cheeky Monkey.  Dylan along with his band mates, drove from their previous nights gig in Guelph to be here in time for an afternoon acoustic solo set by Dylan. Playing one of his favourite instruments, his treasured vintage 1920's 4 string tenor guitar, he entertained the audience with a mix of his original songs and interesting stories.  His songs are sometimes serious, sometimes whimsical, the way any good songwriters material should be.  They are well crafted songs, but what really stands out when Dylan performs is his emotionally charged delivery.  Going from a soft, intimate sound one moment to soaring and impassioned the next, impressed many of us.  His vocal projection certainly did not need any microphone amplification in our store.  Dylan  has the art of personal volume control mastered using his voice as an ...

White Cowbell Oklahoma’s visit

White Cowbell Oklahoma’s...

The phrase, "just when you think you've seen it all" came to my mind on Saturday June 21st.  In this business, we see & meet a very diverse continuous flow of interest people from all corners of the country and even the world.  Have to say though, the over 6 foot tall, very slender man with the big cowboy hat and infectious smile along with his friend sporting pork chop sideburns caught my attention.  They were with three other fellas shopping in the vinyl area mostly.  Obviously, they were not from Sarnia and obviously they looked like they should be in a band. When they come up to the front counter to make their purchases, the man with the sideburns extended his hand to shake mine and he introduced himself as a close friend of my nephew Jim.   Took me a moment to register who he was.  Oh yeah, my ...

Cheeky Charlie Meets Clayton...

On April 3, 2022 a couple of fellas I have not seen before walked into Cheeky Monkey.   One of them headed straight for the vinyl record bins while his buddy wondered around a bit before heading out the door. Turned out the vinyl lover was Clayton Linthicum, a member of the band DEEP DARK WOODS, the duo KACY & CLAYTON and currently on tour with ZACHERY LUCKY.  The other fella turned out to be Zachery who was preoccupied with the business end of the tour and had gone out to their car to do some "work" while Clayton shopped. They were on their way down the 402 to play later that night at the London Music Club with a slight detour through Stratford first.  The night before they played a house concert at our friends Lori & Al's "Squeaky Hinge" venue (their lovely home).  It was great to meet and chat ...

Cheeky Charlie’s Hypnotic Meeting

Cheeky Charlie’s...

Today, Cheeky Charlie along with Roland and I, had the pleasure of meeting Dez the "assistant' to Comedy Hypnotist, ROBERT MAXWELL, as well as Robert himself and his lovely wife.  They all stopped in to say hi before going on stage for their show tonight at the Library Auditorium. Robert explained (with a twinkle in his eye) that Dez likes to do bad things to good people. Touring the country constantly, they are regulars in many of the larger cities in the area, but this is his first time in Sarnia. For those of you who missed the show this time around, Robert has assured me they will be back next year. Here's hoping!   Subscribe to the Cheeky Monkey newsletter so will get plenty of advance notice.  After our chat, this is one family friendly hypnotist you will want to see live. For a small taste of Robert's abilities - watch the ...

RECORD STORE DAY 2013 - What A Par TEE!

Posted in: ADVENTURES OF CHEEKY CHARLIE, Concerts & Events, Local Talent, News | No Comments

Holy music lovers Batman!!  What a huge, wonderful party RECORD STORE DAY 2013 turned out to be. The day started with the expected line up at the door before opening at 9:30 am.  I wouldn't say it was a frenzied stampede, but it was orderly mayhem of the best kind.  Smiling faces abounded as they found the treasured exclusive RSD releases they were hoping for. As the doors opened and the crowd came in, local band BORDERLITE TRIO started playing at the back area of the store.  This band was perfect for kicking of the day of live music.   Their playlist of covers ranged from Jason Mraz to Zac Brown Band.  For a three piece,  they back a lot of bunch.  For those who missed hearing them, watch for their upcoming gigs on our EVENTS calender.  They are due to play again here at Cheeky Monkey for the October 4th First ...

Six String Nation Guitar’s Feb. First Friday Visit

Posted in: ADVENTURES OF CHEEKY CHARLIE, Concerts & Events, First Friday, News | No Comments

Who cared that it was a bone chilling cold February 1st evening? Certainly not the large crowd inside Cheeky Monkey that were here to enjoy seeing and hearing the legendary Six String Nation Guitar know as 'Voyageur'. Local musicians Jim Chevalier, Brenden E. Fraser, Adam Miner, Dave Miner and Mark Potvin took turns playing 'Voyageur' throughout the evening making it a wonderful mix of songs being performed using Canada's guitar. 'Voyageur's' curator, historian and man responsible for it's creation, Jowi Taylor gave a wonderful moving talk and visual presentation explaining the story behind what makes this guitar so important.  As Jowi tells it, the guitar was made as a symbol of national unity, to explore Canadian identity, and to connect people from all regions in Canada.  It is made from 64 pieces of bone, metal, wood, stone and fabric, representing every province and territory. The guitar's neck has wood from the deck of the Bluenose ...

Yukon Blonde Played @ Cheeky Monkey

Posted in: ADVENTURES OF CHEEKY CHARLIE, Concerts & Events, News | No Comments

A huge 'thank you' to Dine Alone Records for contacting us and arranging for the fabulous B.C. band YUKON BLONDE doing an acoustic in-store appearance at Cheeky Monkey on Wednesday, December 5th. They were in town as the opening act for The Sheepdogs at The Industry later the same night. This was not the first time they have played in Sarnia, but it was the first time playing in our store and hopefully not the last. You may have seen them before at Paddy Flaherty's. The core band is 3 members with the occasional 'friend' added in for fun as was the case here. All four played guitar with the 3 main members doing the singing. Harmonies - oh my gosh what fantastic harmonic voices they have. All their songs have catchy melodies and beats that get your toes tapping. Their music is best described as 'rootsy' in the vain of Mumford ...
