Based on a noir novella by Jonathan Ames, You Were Never Really Here follows the psychological breakdown of Joe, a former US soldier and FBI agent (Joaquin Phoenix) on a sex-trafficking task force who now devotes his considerable capacity for great violence to the rescue of kidnapped young women. When his latest job to retrieve Nina (Ekaterina Samsonov), the daughter of a senator (Alex Mannette), goes brutally wrong and his relationship with his sick mother deteriorates, Joe is forced to confront his inability to save anyone — not Nina, not his mother, and, least of all, himself. With an unforgettable score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and one of best acting performances of the year (and Phoenix’s career), the fourth features from writer-director Lynne Ramsay, won the Best Screenplay and Best Actor Awards at Cannes in 2017 and will stay with you long after you leave the cinema.
“Builds like a tornado towards a haunting finale that showcases just why [Ramsay] is one of the finest and most singular filmmakers around” - Ross Miller, The National
“You Were Never Really Here is Lynne Ramsay’s dark masterpiece ”
-Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail
